The local council stated they were unable to remove the eyes without damaging the artwork.

A teenager from Australia has appeared in court after reportedly defacing a sizable blue sculpture of a legendary being by affixing plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, aged 19, appeared via phone at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with a single charge of property damage.

In a statement at the moment of the recent event, the local council said that surveillance video showed a individual placing fake eyes on the sculpture, which locals have dubbed the “Blue Blob”.

The accused made no plea and told the judge she was unwell, according to news outlets, with the magistrate advising her to find a legal representative before her next court date in December.

The following day the reported event, the city leader said that restoration to the much-loved public artwork would be expensive as the stickers could not be detached without damaging the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a cherished public artwork is unacceptable and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those people of our community who have embraced Cast in Blue.”

The mayor said the local government would seek the “substantial” restoration expenses from those responsible for the vandalism.

At the time the artwork was first proposed, it drew varied responses from the area residents due to its cost and appearance.

Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the artwork depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an prehistoric marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.

Formal name vs. nickname
