🔗 Share this article ‘Celebrating like a Champions League champion’ - Kendall’s special evening for England Kendall scored quickly on her second start for the national team. “Her celebration was worthy of a Champions League triumph,” said England manager Sarina Wiegman with a smile. For Lucia Kendall, the feeling was almost identical. Wiegman was describing the moment the Aston Villa midfielder sprinted off into the corner after slotting her first Lionesses goal – early in a win over Ghana at St Mary's Stadium. “I think the pitch needs some attention after that!” she joked, referring to Kendall’s perfect knee slide. As the 21-year-old stood up, with a look of disbelief and engulfed by her team-mates, a beaming smile spread across her face. A Dream Return to St Mary's Having been “a staple” of Southampton for a decade, where she progressed from the youth ranks to play over a century of games, her summer switch to Villa was a major move. So when she scored at St Mary's Stadium on her return, and on only her third England appearance, it was the pinnacle of her career. “To do it here, where I was raised, was an immensely special moment. This place shaped the player I am,” Kendall stated. “It felt like it was written [in the stars]. It was so special. I got flooded with emotion really.” ‘Things Have Gone So Quickly’ Southampton built her foundation, yet a formative decision made when she was 15 shaped her destiny. The gifted youngster was also a keen cricketer – her dad Will represented Hampshire – but eventually had to choose between the sports just as she was breaking into Southampton's first-team squad. She opted for football. “It presented a dilemma. Juggling both became impossible,” Kendall explained in a October media conference. “I loved playing cricket growing up. It was a really difficult decision. I went back and forth, but when the time came, I knew I enjoy football a bit more.” Growing up admiring Chelsea and Frank Lampard’s goal-getting midfield exploits, Kendall is embarking on her own path with comparable attacking output. Her ability to handle first-team football alongside a psychology degree signaled the mental fortitude and commitment required for the top level. The club fought to keep her, but with her deal up, Villa seized the opportunity to bring her to the top flight. In a matter of months, Kendall has rapidly ascended, securing a starting spot in the WSL and a call-up to the national team. “Displaying consistency is challenging for any new arrival in the WSL, but she has managed it,” said Wiegman. “The pace of her rise has been breathtaking, yet she maintains her performance standard, proving her quality impressively.” Kendall certainly enjoyed herself at St Mary's, striking the crossbar later in the first half and almost setting up Villa team-mate Missy Bo Kearns for a goal, before Alessia Russo added a second with an injury-time penalty. Exiting the pitch to acclaim, the announcer highlighted her deep connection to the club and city. With 29 Southampton goals to her name, she noted, “The faith and consistent playing time I received from 16 proved vital. “Their unwavering belief in my abilities made me feel prepared for the challenge ahead. “I knew that I had to go in [to England] and prove why I should be playing at this level. The speed of the game is quicker and it was like going up a division.” Praise for a Complete Midfielder Prior to her summer switch, Kendall played 103 games for Southampton. Kendall has made an instant impression at international level, with observers stating she has just “got it” as a midfielder and looks like a “natural”. While mindful of protecting her young star, Wiegman is unworried due to Kendall’s grounded and professional attitude. Days after being called up by the Lionesses for the first time, Kendall was addressing the media saying she was eager to impress, but also understood the need for the team's greater good and whatever role she needed to play in that. According to Russo, Kendall’s integration was so smooth it seemed she’d was a veteran presence. “{This team's just gone on to win back-to
