The child of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terror charges at the commencement of her court case in the harbor city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43 years old, is being prosecuted over remarks she made on online platforms four years ago during deadly unrest in South Africa that followed the arrest of her parent.

A week of disorder in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including plundering and arson, resulted in at least three hundred dead and caused damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).

She has been accused of encouraging this unrest and is charged with charges of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.

Context of the Legal Matter

The demonstrations were concentrated in the areas of Gauteng region and KZN and followed the ex-leader's apprehension for defying a court order to appear as a witness at an inquiry into accusations of graft while he was in power.

She has consistently refuted the allegations against her, with her lawyer previously calling the government's evidence as unsubstantiated.

She has also consistently claimed the accusations against her were an bid to settle political scores with her dad after he started his own political organization and competed against the ANC.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and kinship targeting" against the ex-leader and his relatives.

A handful of followers from her group, the political party, turned up outside the judicial building, while her parent and other organization officials attended the court sessions inside.

Her legal team has argued that the evidence presented by prosecutors is unconvincing and fails to provide substantial grounds for a guilty verdict.

Central Elements of the Trial

  • Online statements from the past form the core of the government's evidence
  • Violent unrest in July 2021 resulted in major casualties and economic damage
  • The defendant confronts multiple allegations of encouragement to violence
  • Legal hearings are projected to proceed for numerous days

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their arguments before the court in what is expected to be a carefully observed court case with significant political implications for South Africa.
