Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property in the vicinity of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who ran away subsequent to the explosion was located not long after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area showed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” stated Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that previous tries had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The leader of the Veneto region, President Zaia, stated the residence was facing an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the siblings.

Mediators had been sent to talk with the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the house. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Petrol bombs were also found at the residence, the minister stated.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the explosion included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had taken place on a floor above the doorway and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Moments before the incident, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents stated to local news, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
