Gareth Southgate Reveals Priorities on Guiding the Next Generation Over Returning to Coaching

Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is avoiding a comeback in football management, noting that it would be tough to match the higher calling he felt as England’s manager.

The former coach indicated his intention to channel his attention toward supporting the next generation and countering what he labeled a dominant downbeat story presently prevalent in the country.

Embracing New Avenues Beyond Coaching

Speaking on air, he was prompted regarding talk linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and other leagues.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he answered. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Positive Examples

Prior to the publication of his new title, his leadership-focused book, the author emphasized that he is “very passionate” about setting examples for teenagers, utilizing insights from his period as head coach of the national side from 2016 and 2024, as well as his personal family life.

He feels that his experience coaching England, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to widely supported, holds broader applications.

“At the beginning, there was a major gap between the team and the fans,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Parenting and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “Currently, a pessimistic story dominates national discourse, and we must offer youth optimism and direction. The country is full of potential, but young individuals require positive influences and supportive peers, as these choices shape their futures profoundly.”

Common Ground Above Division

The former manager stressed that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often centers on division.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he commented. “Many areas face economic hardship, which naturally inspires demands for improvement. However, I’ve experienced the power of national unity. In the Covid crisis, acts of community support showed the country at its finest, proving our resilience when challenged.”

The manager’s new release, titled Dear England, is set to offer additional perspectives on guidance and country pride inspired by his remarkable professional journey.
