Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
Summers announced he would step back from public duties after Congressional panel disclosed his frequent correspondence with Epstein

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just days after a batch of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became publicly available.

He remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and anticipate observing their progress".

The prominent academic, who formerly headed the prestigious university, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The newly public emails revealed that the economist communicated with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before his 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it respected his choice to resign.

"We value his many contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," OpenAI stated.

Political Context

This news comes after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on recently to approve a measure that would require the Department of Justice to make public its files on the case.

The bill will afterward move to the office of the White House for approval. He has stated he plans to sign the measure, after changing his position on the issue following pushback from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-related messages released by the Congressional committee recently mentioned numerous well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.

The messages indicated that Summers and the financier often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to introduce the official to notable international personalities.

Personal Response

After the messages were made available with the public, the former official expressed he accepted "complete accountability for my misguided choice to continue communicating with the financier".

He continued that he hoped "to rebuild confidence and fix relationships with the persons nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist occupied leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led Harvard from five years and is still a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a progressive policy institute in DC where Summers was a prominent member, verified that he was no longer affiliated with the organization.

Summers entered the directorate of the AI company, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
