Publicly available records has recorded 345 children disappearing from the region, with 56 of those remaining unaccounted for.

Between 2021 and 2023, when two hotels for children were run in addition to hotels in various locations, 132 children vanished from these facilities. Of these, 108 were subsequently located but 24 are yet to be found.

Between 2020 and August 2025, 213 children went missing from reception centres for these minors, with 182 found and 32 yet to be accounted for.

Origin Statistics of Unaccounted Youths

In both cases, Albanian children were the biggest contingent to go missing, making up 50% the overall number from the hotels, 68, and in excess of one-fourth from the welcome hubs, 65.

The next most common ethnic groups to have vanished from both places are Afghan nationals followed by Iranians.

Necessary Steps to Resolve the Situation

Experts stated more needed to be done to recover the unaccounted youths. "They have not chosen to vanish. These minors should be participating in activities in the park and studying for their GCSEs, not being exploited by criminal groups in circumstances we know involve being restrained, physically and sexually assaulted, and punished by being denied nourishment."

Legal Changes and Continuing Issues

In December 2023, following a protracted judicial process concerning solitary migrant children vanishing from all temporary accommodations, the procedure of routinely accommodating children in hotels was deemed improper.

As an alternative, authorities agreed to strengthen security for these children by extending the use of welcome hubs. Following that legal decision an additional 44 children have vanished from these facilities, with 10 remaining unaccounted for and 34 found.

"If a youth does go missing, the risk that they are being mistreated grows markedly and they are undoubtedly more vulnerable to abuse and smuggling."

Government Comments

A spokesperson said: "Every minor or teenager vanishing from custody is a serious concern and we take each necessary step to protect them."

"Lone migrant youths are at risk to being exploited and abused due to their distance from loved ones and situations of their journeys to the UK."

The official explained that qualified child protection staff reviewed the children's vulnerability of being exploited with protective measures employed in cooperation with other agencies, such as authorities and relevant departments.

Agencies also direct children to mechanisms and services to help mitigate the danger of exploitation in the UK, including the national referral mechanism and the dedicated advocacy service. "Even then it is difficult to prevent every minor from going missing."

An additional official commented: "The safety and welfare of lone migrant youths stays important, and we take children vanishing very gravely. We persist in frequently assess our procedures for developments if this occurs, distributing appropriate details with regional law enforcement and municipal agencies examining the issue."
