Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of until after the conversation. It’s a powerful visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to the title and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.

Influences and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. He admits he must to temper his aggression, after being sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
