The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique experience where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate personas, all possessing unique anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.

Judging by showcased footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.

A World of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to every individual."

The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision

At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player believes a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on platforms.
