Tuchel Seeks Jude Bellingham's Fire So Long As The Three Lions' Star Leaves His Ego at the Door.

A single omission was enough. A second one and it might have appeared vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is much too clever not to understand that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, although it is also up to the player to fit into the game plans and squad hierarchies essential with England now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.

Tuchel desires his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Personal talent matters but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a cost when stardom prevails. Still, a point has been made.

The midfielder was given food for thought after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed the national side qualify at the tournament in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers shine as a high-pressing No 10. He listened as Tuchel discuss valuing the squad's spirit and values. Naturally, he has responded in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for his club against their rivals and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; another omission would have put his tournament chances precarious.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder focused on intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that his period not playing has made him realize that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now provide cover for the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.

“No issue exists with him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Jude possesses the edge. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone must support him and create an environment which he can use that intensity towards opponents and towards the goals we are building as a team.”

The star dominated the spotlight at the team news conference for this month’s final group games against Serbia and Albania. Any other news? Well, how about another talent? This is another prodigious No 10 requiring coaching. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has struggled to perform well recently but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after his performance in Manchester City’s win against the German side recently.

The question, however, is how to use the various creators at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the tournament be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing both stars into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s style in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel doing similar if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel wants him close to Kane. “It is illogical to tell Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I have this idea regarding him for years. I think it matches his abilities best.”

He conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion for the game, then obviously something is not right, be it the position, the setup, I don’t know.

“I think he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a certain structure, to have a defined role. Believe he profits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly am I to receive the ball? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel discussed one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other drilling in strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for Manchester City at defense. Interest is high.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or the other. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

At the same time, it is also a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting Kane to net in a friendly win versus the Scots in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in many appearances for the national team when the pair combined for a score. The coach will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the individuals,” he stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be guaranteed to begin versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants Bellingham committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside the ego outside. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an even better one.
